TotalEnergies is a dynamic, multi-energy company committed to producing affordable, reliable, cleaner and accessible energy to as many people as possible.
With a presence in the UK for over 50 years, TotalEnergies plays a crucial role in meeting the nation's energy needs as the largest operator of UK gas production, whilst also driving the transition towards renewable energy sources. The company was a host port sponsor back in 2011 when The Tall Ships Races last visited Lerwick. “This was during the construction phase of the Shetland Gas Plant, and it is amazing to think that we are sponsoring Tall Ships again 12 years later as part of the community in Shetland. Our employees are really excited to be getting involved and volunteering their help” Rhonda Miller, Societal Lead atTotalEnergies, tells us.
The company recognises the importance of community involvement and aims to make a positive impact wherever it operates. “The gas plant started production in 2016 but we have established deep roots and actively engaged with the local community since 2009, when planning began”, Rhonda continues. “More than half of our employees are local and we’re committed to continuing to develop local skill-sets.”
With a strong focus on safety, TotalEnergies is proud to support initiatives like the Driving Ambition programme, a collaborative effort involving Emergency Services and SIC, which educates young adults on road safety whilst learning to drive on the island. They also participate in multiple volunteering programmes, contributing to initiatives like the Voar Redd Up and Michael's Wood. Their ongoing commitment to the communities they operate in showcases their desire to make a lasting and positive difference.
The organisation particularly wants to encourage and inspire young people to consider careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) - as it offers a rewarding career. Through the Scottish Council for Development and Industry (SCDI) Young Engineers and Science Clubs, it supports STEM outreach programmes across Shetland, providing resource packs for teachers as well as gas plant employees visiting schools to take part in fun activities and games with primary and secondary pupils.
TotalEnergies also nurtures the potential of young people through their apprenticeship programmes. “We have trained almost 40 apprentices at the gas plant”, Rhonda explains. “After studying at college for two years, apprentices are given valuable on-the-job training at our facilities for another two years with the support of a mentor. This creates a fantastic foundation for developing the technical know-how to embark on a career in the energy industry. And as the sector transitions to a cleaner, low carbon energy future, apprentices will be able to transition their skill-sets too.”
The organisation is actively expanding its portfolio of renewable energy projects, recognising the importance of sustainable and green energy sources. The company has invested significantly in offshore wind farms like Seagreen (Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm) and the West of Orkney Wind Farm which will power over two million UK homes with renewable energy.
TotalEnergies’ involvement in the Shetland community goes far beyond energy production. Through their commitment to community engagement, support for local initiatives, investment in renewable energy, and dedication to developing young talent, the company is driving positive change. As they continue to shape the energy landscape and inspire the next generation, they stand as a reliable and forward-thinking partner in building a sustainable future for all.
