As the Tall Ships Races visit to Lerwick event unfolds, showcasing the vibrant maritime heritage of the Shetland Islands, it is essential to recognise the local businesses that play a significant role in sponsorship for the event. Among them is Frank L. Johnston Ltd (FLJ), a long-standing multi-skilled contractor based in Tingwall. Celebrating its 50th anniversary of service, FLJ stands as one of the oldest continuous businesses in Shetland. With a strong focus on sustainability and expertise in water infrastructure, FLJ has made valuable contributions to the community, particularly in Lerwick Port Authority projects.
The company tells us “Having been involved in key Lerwick Port Authority projects during the past 50 years, we are extremely proud to support such a beneficial community event” FLJ has worked on many projects with the LPA. Such as improving LPA facilities, making hard-standing areas, providing explosives, and working on deep-water projects. One of their biggest projects with the LPA was working on the decommissioning project at Dales Voe.
At FLJ, sustainability and environmental friendliness are core values that permeate their work. The company actively strives to utilise environmentally friendly materials, prioritising local sourcing whenever possible. By undertaking projects that promote sustainability, FLJ leaves a positive impact on the environment. One notable accomplishment is their involvement in peatland restoration works in Yell. Recognising that bare peatland is a significant emitter of greenhouse gases, FLJ has played a crucial role in restoring these areas. Through restoration efforts, peatlands can absorb greenhouse gases, making a tangible contribution to combatting climate change.
As providers under the Scottish Water framework, FLJ understands the critical importance of a hygienic water supply and efficient sewage disposal. Throughout their 50-year history, FLJ has successfully completed numerous water infrastructure projects across the Shetland Mainland and outer Isles. A notable achievement is their involvement in the installation of water treatment facilities in various outer islands, ensuring that these remote communities have access to a clean and continuous supply of fresh water. FLJ's expertise in water infrastructure has proven instrumental in enhancing the quality of life for residents in these areas.
As FLJ continues to prioritize environmental friendliness and community welfare, they play a vital role in shaping a more sustainable and resilient future for the Shetland Islands.
