Written by Alex Plant: Scottish Water’s new CEO
I’m very excited to be making my first trip to Shetland, 8 weeks into my role as Chief Executive of Scottish Water. I am also fortunate that the timing of my visit to this beautiful part of the world coincides with the spectacular occasion of Tall Ships Race. Scottish Water is delighted to be supporting Lerwick’s hosting of the magnificent Tall Ships, through our sponsorship of the Victoria Pier site.
Delivering excellent service for customers, working with communities and protecting and enhancing the environment are the cornerstones of what we do at Scottish Water. In my first months in the role, I am taking every opportunity to listen to our customers and stakeholders, and I will be doing exactly that with the communities of Shetland, to understand both the challenges and the opportunities in these islands.
There is no doubt that island communities have a very special relationship with their marine environment. The Shetland community showed that to people all around the world 30 years ago when you came together in response to the Braer disaster.
Taking action together remains at the heart of the biggest environmental challenges that we face. Our team at the event will be showcasing our Nature Calls campaign, which asks the public to ‘Bin the wipe’ and has been successful in persuading legislators of the need to ban wipes containing plastic.
However, despite the success of Nature Calls with the public and our politicians, as we stand today wet wipes still show up in 80% of all sewer chokes. So, we still have a long way to go: there were over 34,000 sewer blockages across Scotland last year, costing around £7m to clear up.
We are also transforming our business to cope with the challenges that climate change will bring – one aspect of this is our £500 million investment to improve waste water systems through our Urban Water Improvement Routemap.
I am looking forward to meeting as many people as possible during my time in Shetland. Please come and say hello to me and the team, and top up your water bottle from one of our Top up Taps!
