Sail Training Shetland
Sail Aboard Sail Training Shetland (STS), is a charity registered in Scotland SC041182, run entirely by volunteers. Sail Training Shetland managed the recruitment and placement of sail trainees for The Tall Ships Races 2023 at Lerwick on behalf of Shetland Tall Ships Ltd. Trainees were not required to make a personal financial contribution towards the journey – so that cost was not a barrier to anyone applying.
In total, one hundred trainees were placed on eight different ships during the Cruise in Company and Race 3 of the series. STS managed the logistics for all these placements, coordinating arrangements with all other local authority areas, including recruitment, selection and arranging all ship placements, travel, accommodation and insurance requirements.
Sail Training Shetland is the only organisation of it's type in Scotland and is regarded very highly for the commitment and professionalism of its volunteers and the incredible achievement of funding and placing 100 trainees against a contractual requirement of 75. Sail Training Shetland will continue to place trainees on sail training experiences in future years. At the 2023 Sail Training International Conference, Sail Training Shetland was awarded 'Sail Training Organiser of the Year - Small Vessel' in recognition of the excellent work of the organisation.

Shetland’s own Tall Ship, Swan, took part in each stage of the races and sailed with a full crew of trainees – the ships core crew were all past sail trainees and provided an excellent experience for the new recruits.
