In today's world, the pursuit of sustainable energy sources has become paramount. As nations strive to reduce their carbon footprint and achieve a greener future, companies like ESB are taking centre stage. ESB, an Irish semi-state company, has been at the forefront of Ireland's energy landscape since its inception in 1927. With an impressive history of generating green electricity and a commitment to net zero emissions by 2050, ESB is paving the way for a sustainable future. ESB are sponsors for The Tall Ships Races visit to Lerwick, the two companies' values align perfectly, they both harness the power of wind energy.
ESB's journey began with the construction of a hydroelectric plant in 1927, which provided a significant portion of the electricity production for the fledgling state. The company is now Ireland’s foremost energy provider and continues to spearhead the renewable energy transition. With over 7,000 employees who are partial owners, ESB embodies the concept of empowering communities and fostering a sense of shared responsibility.
As part of their net zero by 2040 commitment, ESB is developing a 500MW floating wind farm approximately 40 km east of the Shetland Islands, this initiative aims to harness the power of wind to generate clean electricity. Once operational, the farm will make a significant contributor to Scotland's renewable energy goals. It is estimated that the wind farm will provide enough energy to power approximately 350,000 Scottish households, a remarkable feat that showcases the potential of wind energy.
Taking the helm of ESB’s Shetland project is Dr. Cian Desmond who assumes the role of Project Director with enthusiasm. He has expressed his excitement about the opportunity to lead this transformative endeavour. Cian tells us "I greatly look forward to getting to know Shetland and its communities. Together we will develop this innovative project in a manner which maximises the social, economic, and environmental benefits for the Islands”.
If you're intrigued by the project and its potential impact, ESB invites you to join their mailing list.
